Release 5 (ish)
Hi everyone, it's been a while! First off, thank you all for the support; I keep receiving messages from folks and truly appreciate hearing from everyone :)
I've just added a z3 file with "Release 5" in the header, and wanted to clarify what this was:
Since the original release, from time to time, some people using certain interpreters (Apple II and Atari 8-bit are the most common) report bugs in certain contexts - for instance, I've heard a lot of people's inventory vanishing when they take the dirty sixpence. The issue happens in some interpreters, it is not in the code, and someone even got that specific problem to be fixed by recompiling the game with a slight rewording of a subroutine.
This was investigated by Fredrik Ramsberg when I mentioned it on the PunyInform Discord earlier this year (thank you so much Fredrik!). Turns out that in PunyInform's code, there was a benign assumption that most interpreters would be capable of handling (depending on whether an argument is zero or not), but somehow some of the old closed-source interpreters were not, and were thus executing something with an empty argument, which wreaked havoc.
Fredrik provided a fix for this, and I cannot thank him enough for this. This is what "Release 5" is: the game is identical, except that if you had an issue on some interpreters, well, now maybe you won't. I hope this saves some people some headaches!
Unfortunately, my build toolchain is broken (I changed computers, or maybe I moved folders around and broke everything, who knows), so I am unable to provide updated disk images for this release. ALL DISK IMAGES ON ITCH ARE RELEASE 4, NOT RELEASE 5. If you'd like to make a "Release 5" disk image, you can look into tools like Stefan Vogt's Puny Build Tools (https://github.com/ByteProject/Puny-BuildTools).
Happy adventuring!
